School's in for AFP detector dogs

The first class of Australian Federal Police detection dog teams to be trained under a $17.8 million funding boost have begun a 13-week course.

"Within the next year an additional seventeen firearms and explosive detection dog teams will patrol Australia's eight major international airports," Minister for Home Affairs Brendan O'Connor said.

In addition to the seventeen dog and handler teams, another six AFP trainers will be recruited across the country.

The dogs for the seventeen new teams are being provided by the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service's breeding program.

The firearms and explosive detection dog teams will work at Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney airports.

In the most recent Budget, the Gillard Government delivered $759.4 million for policing at Australian airports.

This $17.8 million in extra funding for the AFP's firearms and explosive detection dog teams is part of a $200 million package for aviation security initiatives.
