AFP officers deployed to Afghanistan

Six Australian Federal Police (AFP) members have deployed to Afghanistan to contribute to the ongoing capacity building and development of the Afghan National Police.

"This additional deployment of AFP members reinforces the approach the AFP is taking in Afghanistan to work with coalition partners to contribute to police capacity development and provide policing advice," Minister for Home Affairs Brendan O'Connor said.

The AFP members will assist the Afghan National Police to build and develop the core policing capacity with support centred on the Provincial Training Centre in Tarin Kowt, Oruzgan Province.

The AFP will also mentor and advise training staff, both Afghan and international, who are engaged in rebuilding and retraining the Afghan National Police.

"These members deploying to Afghanistan have policing skills that will prove valuable in the mission including extensive training, leadership, management, planning and operational experience," Mr O'Connor said.

"The AFP trainers will be operating in a challenging environment, but their work is vital to boosting security and safety in Oruzgan province.

"The Australian Government has provided funding to the AFP of $32.1 million over two years to undertake this vital role."

The additional AFP members will join those already deployed in Oruzgan, Kandahar and Kabul.

This latest deployment brings the total number of AFP members deployed in Afghanistan to 28.
