Centaman counts Australian Open crowd

Melbourne and Olympic Parks (MOPT) used a Centaman Systems laser scanner to count pedestrian traffic at entry and exit points for the Australian Open.

For the event, MOPT wanted to be able to accurately count the pedestrian traffic at the entry/exit points in real time.

There was also a requirement from licensing to provide an accurate real-time head count for the new Grand Slam Oval area.

The challenge was to accurately count people going through five-metre-wide entrances without causing interference to the visitor experience.

Centaman Systems intalled laser scanners, which, when mounted directly over entrances, could connect via the existing network to a central PC running Traffic Insight people-counting software.

The scanners were commissioned to only detect objects in a certain height window, allowing the system to ignore small animals, birds and bags while accurately recording visitor numbers.

The Traffic Insight software logged counts from all sensors, providing real-time counts of population levels as well as hourly counts of pedestrian traffic in and out of areas.
